Hastings was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Joan Amory (Loomis) and Wilmot Reed Hastings.
[4] His maternal great-grandfather was attorney, financier, scientist, inventor and philanthropist Alfred Lee Loomis.
[5] He attended
Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He entered Marine Corps officer training through their Platoon Leader Class and spent the summer of 1981 in Officer Candidate School at Marine Corps Base Quantico. He did not complete the training and never commissioned into the Marine Corps, choosing instead to pursue service in the Peace Corps.[6]
After graduating from
Bowdoin College, Hastings joined the Peace Corps «out of a combination of service and adventure»,
[7] and went to teach high school math in
Swaziland from 1983 to 1985. He credits part of his entrepreneurial spirit to his time in the Peace Corps.
[7] «Once you have hitchhiked across Africa with ten bucks in your pocket, starting a business doesn’t seem too intimidating.»
[8]
After returning from the Peace Corps, Hastings went on to attend
Stanford University. He graduated in 1988 with a
master’s degree in
computer science.

Alfred Lee Loomis (November 4, 1887 – August 11, 1975) was an American
attorney,
investment banker,
philanthropist,
scientist,
physicist, inventor of the
LORAN Long Range Navigation System, and a lifelong patron of scientific research.
He established the Loomis Laboratory in Tuxedo Park, New York, and his role in the development of radar and the atomic bomb contributed to the
Allied victory in
World War II.
[1] He invented the
Aberdeen Chronograph for measuring muzzle velocities,
[2] contributed significantly (perhaps critically, according to
Luis Alvarez[3]) to the development of a
ground-controlled approach technology for aircraft, and participated in preliminary meetings of the
Manhattan Project.

Randolph was born in
Chappaqua, New York, the eldest child of Stephen Bernays Randolph, an Austrian-born nuclear engineer, and Muriel Lipchik of Brooklyn, New York.
[7][8] Randolph’s paternal great-granduncle was psychoanalysis pioneer Sigmund Freud and his paternal great-uncle was Edward Bernays, an Austrian-American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda.
[9] Randolph spent his summers during high school and college working for the National Outdoor Leadership School, becoming one of its youngest instructors. He graduated from
Hamilton College in New York with a geology degree
Marc Randolph – Wikipedia
After the US entered the war, the Committee on Public Information hired Bernays to work for its Bureau of Latin-American Affairs, based in an office in New York. Bernays, along with Lieutenant F. E. Ackerman, focused on building support for war, domestically and abroad, focusing especially on businesses operating in Latin America.
[19][20] Bernays referred to this work as «psychological warfare«.
[21][22]
After fighting ended, Bernays was part of a sixteen-person publicity group working for the CPI at the
Paris Peace Conference. A scandal arose from his reference to propaganda in a press release. As reported by the
New York World, the «announced object of the expedition is ‘to interpret the work of the Peace Conference by keeping up a worldwide propaganda to disseminate American accomplishments and ideals.'»
[23][24]
Bernays later described a realization that his work for the CPI could be also be used in peacetime:
There was one basic lesson I learned in the CPI—that efforts comparable to those applied by the CPI to affect the attitudes of the enemy, of neutrals, and people of this country could be applied with equal facility to peacetime pursuits. In other words, what could be done for a nation at war could be done for organizations and people in a nation at peace.
